Program Note

Three Scarlet Moods was written in 2006 for clarinetist Shirley Brill and pianist Jonathan Aner. The project first came to fruition after individual collaborations with them on two earlier pieces after which they proposed a project of three fantasy pieces.

Each individual movement is distinctly different in character and is intended to be a small narrative that forms the backdrop for a larger narrative. The first movement, Shades of Red, begins lyrically but is quickly overshadowed by shards of poignant motives that rise to a climax and quickly dissipate to allow the primary melody a successful defeat. The name of the movement comes from the idea that red, though dense in nature, can phase through many shades to become as pale and simple as one can possible imagine.

The second movement, Tango, clearly embodies a sensual quality producing the common qualities of drama, passion, fire and love. The tango dance originated in Buenos Aires, Argentina in the lower class districts while the music is a culmination of music from Europe and South America and rhythms from Africa.

Redlight, the final movement, takes its name from the infamous red-light districts found in various places across the world. Red-light districts have been home to prostitution and brothels since the 1890s but the association with the color red has been around since Biblical times when the prostitute Rehab helped the spies of Jericho and marked her house with a red rope. The movement has little to do with prostitution, particularly historically, but characteristically it is brash and unrestrained and perhaps at times even boasts bawdy chords.
